It’s rare to find someone who hasn’t been affected by spider veins — those spindly blood vessels that rise to the surface of your skin, creating a sort of web, as the name suggests. In fact, researchers say that most adults develop spider veins at some point in their lives.
If you’re lucky, these veins crop up in places that aren’t all that obvious. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for most people as spider veins tend to favor exposed areas, such as their legs and face.
When it comes to spider veins on your legs, you’ve come to the right place. As a leading vascular practice, The Upper East Side Vein Institute offers a wide range of treatments for problematic veins, including spider veins, varicose veins, and reticular veins.
Thanks to extensive research by our director, Dr. Satjit Bhusri, we only offer proven and effective vein treatments, and Asclera® is a great example of this.
Here’s a look at what you can expect during and after Asclera treatments for spider and reticular veins.
Before we get into the ins and outs of this vein treatment, let’s quickly review how Asclera clears spider veins and reticular veins (dilated bluish veins) from your legs.
The active ingredient in Asclera is liquid polidocanol, and when we inject this drug into your target veins, the polidocanol causes the vein to seal shut, at which point your body reabsorbs the remnants of the small blood vessels, leaving blemish-free skin behind.
Depending upon the size and number of veins you want to treat, you may need a series of Asclera treatments. Most of our patients benefit from one to three Asclera treatments.
When you come in for an Asclera treatment, we first make you comfortable in the treatment area, and then we disinfect and numb the treatment area. From there, our vascular specialist strategically injects Asclera into different areas to effectively shut down the vein.
In all, each Asclera treatment takes us only about 15-45 minutes, on average, to complete so you can get right back to your busy schedule.
Once we deliver your Asclera injections and check that everything looks good, we send you on your way. It’s good that we live in a walking city like New York because we want you to walk a little after your treatment to get your circulation going. About 15-20 minutes should do the trick, and you should continue this walking throughout your treatments.
We also strongly recommend that you wear compression socks or stockings during your treatments, which can further encourage good circulation.
Although there's no real downtime after an Asclera treatment, we do ask that you avoid strenuous exercise, sunbathing, hot tubs and saunas, and long periods of sitting, such as long flights.
As for results, you can expect your treated veins to start to fade away during and after your treatments, and most patients realize optimal results in a month or two after their body has reabsorbed the veins.
