Your journey through life can leave its marks in many different ways — you have scars, sun spots, and now, varicose veins have taken up residence on your legs.
Though there’s nothing we can do to erase the past, we can do plenty to get rid of those lumpy, ropey veins on your legs through targeted vein treatments.
In fact, for the 40 million Americans who have varicose veins, the issue isn’t finding an effective vein treatment, but choosing one since there are so many great options.
Here at The Upper East Side Vein Institute, Dr. Satjit Bhusri and the team pride themselves on offering a comprehensive treatment suite for varicose veins. So, to help you narrow down your choices, we thought we’d take a closer look at one in particular.
Called VenaSeal®, here’s how this innovative approach to varicose veins works.
Let’s kick off this discussion by diving right into the VenaSeal procedure, which we can accomplish in mere minutes.
To get started, we make you comfortable on the treatment table, and then we administer a local anesthetic at the site where we insert a catheter. And the good news is that we only need to make one access point for each vein, in most cases.
Once you’re ready, we insert this catheter, which is a thin tube, into your varicose vein using ultrasound imaging to guide us. Once the end of the catheter is in position, we deliver a small amount of specially formulated medical adhesive into the diseased vein.
Then, we apply light pressure from the outside to seal the vein in that area. From there, we repeat this process until we’ve sealed the entire length of the varicose vein.
Rest assured, your blood will find a new blood vessel to make the journey back to your heart, and also bear in mind that varicose veins form in superficial veins in your legs, which are only responsible for about 10% of the circulation in your legs.
Once we’re finished with your VenaSeal treatment, we simply remove the catheter, and you’re free to leave once we check that everything went well.
When we send you home, we will do so with aftercare instructions, and we want you to follow them. On this list will be incision care, as well as recommendations for wearing compression stockings and keeping your legs elevated. These efforts will help speed up your recovery by taking some of the pressure off the newly sealed vein.
Speaking of recovery, it will take a little bit of time for your treated varicose vein to fade away completely, but most of our patients have smooth, varicose vein-free legs after three months, though your timeline may be shorter.
