4 Benefits of Choosing VenaSeal™ for Varicose Veins

As soon as the ropey, bulging vein(s) first appeared on your legs, you knew one thing — you wanted to hit the rewind button to a time when your legs didn't have varicose veins.

Though board-certified cardiologist Dr. Satjit Bhusri and the vascular team at The Upper East Side Vein Institute may not have a time machine, we do offer some incredibly effective vein treatments that can hit the reset button in your legs.

In fact, for the millions of people with varicose veins — the vascular issue affects nearly one quarter of adults in the United States — finding an effective vein treatment isn’t the issue; it’s choosing from among them.

To help with your decision-making, we outline some great benefits of one such treatment — VenaSeal®. Let’s take a look.

  1. VenaSeal permanently removes varicose veins

Varicose veins can be challenging because, in many cases, once they form, they don't go away on their own. There are some exceptions to this rule, such as varicose veins related to pregnancy, but many of these veins take up permanent residence once they appear.

With VenaSeal, we can permanently close the veins, and the odds of them reappearing are quite slim (only about 5%) since we effectively render the superficial vein inoperable with an adhesive.

  1. VenaSeal is minimally invasive

Undergoing a VenaSeal procedure to treat your varicose veins is quite easy. Once in the treatment room, we administer a local anesthetic, and then we insert a small metal tube called a cannula into the diseased vein. Once in position, we push a medical-grade adhesive through it, and then we apply pressure to seal the vein.

Once we’re finished, we simply remove the cannula, put a small bandage over the tiny incision, and you’re free to go.

  1. There’s no significant downtime with VenaSeal

After your VenaSeal treatment, there’s no real downtime. In fact, we want you to move around to encourage healthy circulation in your legs.

We do recommend that you avoid strenuous lifting, baths and hot tubs, and sun exposure for the first week, just to give your legs a little space to heal. Other than that, you can get right back to your usual schedule.

There are also steps you can take to support your VenaSeal treatment, such as wearing compression stockings and elevating your legs whenever you can.

  1. VenaSeal doesn’t affect circulation

Many of our patients wonder whether vein treatments affect the circulation in their lower legs, and we can tell you that they don’t.

Varicose veins form in the superficial veins in your legs, which are only responsible for a small percentage of the circulation in your legs. The heavy lifting when it comes to circulation is done in the deep veins in your legs, which hold 90% of the blood that travels back to your heart for oxygen.

So, when we treat a varicose vein in your superficial vein with VenaSeal, the blood that might have been circulating through easily finds a healthier vessel for transport.

Given all these benefits, it’s little wonder that more than half a million people in the US underwent vein treatments in 2024 alone.
